Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada, who recently secured silver medals at the 2024 Olympics, are set to transition from the field to a leadership role within the Fijian Drua 7s team for the upcoming Fiji Bitter Mataso 7s tournament. As they continue to recover from injuries, both players will step into coaching positions, guiding their teammates through this exciting competition.
The Drua will boast a strong squad, led by captain Tuidraki Samusamuvodre, along with experienced players such as Joseva Tamani, Kemu Valetini, Epeli Momo, and Ilaisa Droasese. Baden Stephenson, the General Manager of Fijian Drua, expressed enthusiasm about the team’s participation in the Mataso 7s, emphasizing the importance of gaining competitive experience and enjoying the game.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for our players to engage in some match intensity and refine their skills against a talented pool of local teams,” Stephenson noted. He also highlighted Masi and Ravutaumada’s coaching roles as a crucial part of their rehabilitation and personal development, reinforcing the Drua’s commitment to supporting their players through this process.
The Mataso 7s tournament is set to commence tomorrow at Churchill Park in Lautoka, marking an exciting chapter for the Drua as they blend play and mentorship.
This event not only highlights the adaptability of athletes in the face of challenges but also showcases a community approach to sports where experienced players can share their knowledge while giving back to the sport during their time away from competitive play. It’s a positive narrative of resilience and growth in the world of rugby.
