The Fijian diaspora in London came together recently for an extensive two-week consular service provided by officials from Fiji, led by Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Ifereimi Vasu. This outreach program was launched in response to the increasing demands of Fijians living abroad, offering a range of essential services.

The team includes representatives from various sectors, including the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs, the iTaukei Affairs Board, and the Fiji High Commission in London, among others. Common inquiries from the community involve services such as registration for the Vola ni Kawa Bula (VKB), investment opportunities in resource-based sectors, as well as passport renewals and voter registration.

In addition to these inquiries, attendees expressed ongoing concerns about the legalization of kava in the UK, the digitization of Fijian cultural resources, and the importance of reinstating flights between Fiji and the UK, notably Korean Air flights, which are viewed as a vital connection for the community.

This initiative falls in line with previous engagements, such as discussions led by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, who highlighted the critical contributions of the diaspora to the nation’s economy, emphasizing that remittances reached around $1 billion in 2022. Such gatherings aim to foster collaboration and engage the diaspora in national development processes.

The presence of Fijian officials in the UK not only serves practical needs but also reinforces the connection between Fiji and its overseas citizens, encouraging a spirit of community and shared responsibility for the nation’s future. As officials visit various Fijian communities throughout the UK, it becomes clear that these efforts are pivotal in maintaining strong ties with citizens abroad, creating a hopeful outlook for ongoing collaboration and support in the journey towards national development.

The emphasis on unity and the partnership between the government and its diaspora exemplifies a proactive approach toward a brighter future for all Fijians.
