Fijian Diaspora Unites in Geneva for Fiji Day Celebration

A delegation from the Fijian Parliament, led by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, participated in Fiji Day celebrations held at the Fiji House last night.

The event was attended by Fijians living in Geneva, including several Fijian rugby players and their families who traveled from France.

The Speaker expressed gratitude to the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Fiji to Switzerland, Luke Daunivalu, for organizing the gathering that allowed Fijian families and friends to come together and honor this significant occasion.

Minister for Fisheries and Forests, Alitia Bainivalu, also part of the delegation, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the importance of fostering a united and progressive Fiji where everyone can coexist peacefully, setting aside any differences.

“Recently in Parliament, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill 2024 was tabled by the Prime Minister for its first reading. The government will then determine the schedule for the second and third readings before it is passed,” she noted.

Bainivalu encouraged those present to strengthen existing relationships and repair any fractured ones as they celebrate Fiji Day.

A ‘talanoa’ session took place with the diaspora before the ceremonial cutting of the Fiji Day cake.

The delegation is in Geneva for the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, which started with registrations yesterday.

The Speaker is set to deliver his address later this week, while the Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, will chair the meeting for Small Island Developing States on Monday during the assembly’s events.
