The Fijian Cup is set to return to Sigatoka’s Lawaqa Park next month, celebrating sports, community, and culture through three major competitions. Scheduled to take place on November 7-8, the inaugural event will feature the Fiji Touch competition, followed by the Fijian Oztag from November 14-15, and concluding with the Fijian Rugby 9s on November 28-29.
The Fijian Cup will showcase local and regional talent across four divisions: men’s, women’s, mixed open, and mixed masters, with more than $50,000 in prizes available. Richard Henry, the director of Tourism HQ, has noted a strong interest in the touch rugby segment, with 150 teams vying for a limited number of slots. The tournament promises to provide an exciting platform for athletes to display their skills while reinforcing community engagement through workshops, coaching clinics, and donations of sports equipment.
The event’s design prioritizes giving back to local communities, aligning with its core objective of boosting youth rugby development in Fiji. This commitment to community involvement was echoed by Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji, who stated that such initiatives not only uplift local talent but also promote sports tourism, enhancing Fiji’s economic growth.
Fans are encouraged to attend, as the festival fosters unity while highlighting the vibrant culture and hospitality of Fiji. With each competition inviting teams from various backgrounds, the Fijian Cup is poised to not only serve as a competitive platform but also as a celebration of camaraderie, setting a hopeful tone for the future of sports in Fiji.
