The Fijian Cup touch rugby competition is officially underway today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, featuring 32 teams in a much-anticipated showcase of Fijian talent and international sportsmanship. Since its inception in 2016, the event has seen remarkable growth, supported by contributions from the Government of Fiji, the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Tourism HQ.

Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji, expressed gratitude towards the sponsors for creating a platform that enables local talent to compete against some of the best touch players worldwide. He emphasized that the Fijian Cup promotes not only the sport itself but also enhances sports tourism, stimulating economic growth for Fiji.

“This tournament provides local athletes with invaluable experience while aligning with the government’s strategy of promoting sports tourism. It attracts visitors who come to participate in, and enjoy, our beautiful island settings,” Mau stated.

This year’s competition includes 32 teams, with eight local teams competing across four divisions: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and senior mixed masters. With cash prizes on the line, teams are expected to showcase their best performances.

“All teams are aiming high for the generous prizes at stake, so we can expect top-level action on the field,” he remarked, thanking all stakeholders involved in making the event possible. He also extended good wishes to all participating teams.

As a two-day event, the tournament is a testament to Fiji’s deep-rooted passion for touch rugby, uniting communities and highlighting the nation’s renowned hospitality and stunning landscapes.

The Fijian Cup not only serves as a competitive event but also as a celebration of Fijian culture and community spirit, offering hope for continued growth in sports tourism and local talent development.

Overall, the tournament is poised to be an exciting event that not only enhances the sporting landscape of Fiji but also fosters community connections and engages visitors with the country’s rich traditions and scenic beauty.
