The Fijian Cup touch rugby competition commenced today at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, featuring an impressive lineup of 32 teams in an event that showcases Fijian athletic ability and global sportsmanship. Since its inception in 2016, the tournament has flourished, receiving strong support from the Government of Fiji, the Fiji National Sports Commission, and Tourism HQ.
Tevita Mau, President of Touch Federation Fiji, expressed gratitude to sponsors, emphasizing their role in providing a platform to highlight local touch rugby talent alongside some of the best players worldwide. He noted that the Fijian Cup goes beyond just the sport, contributing to sports tourism and economic development in Fiji.
“This competition serves as an opportunity for local athletes to gain experience while contributing to the government’s strategy of promoting sports tourism, thereby benefiting our economy through the influx of visitors who come to participate and enjoy our beautiful islands,” Mau explained.
This year’s tournament features 32 teams, including eight local squads, competing in four categories: men’s open, women’s open, mixed open, and senior mixed masters. With enticing cash prizes available, teams are eager to perform their best on the field.
“Spectators can expect high-caliber touch rugby, as all teams are vying for the substantial rewards on offer,” Mau mentioned, adding his thanks to everyone involved in organizing the event. “I am forever grateful to all stakeholders who made this tournament possible and wish the participating teams the very best of luck.”
The two-day event exemplifies Fiji’s love for touch rugby, fostering community connections while highlighting the nation’s warm hospitality and stunning scenery.
This celebration of sports not only elevates local talent but also positions Fiji as a prime destination for sports tourism, ultimately contributing to the country’s growth and global recognition.
