The upcoming Fijian Cup is set to be an exciting showcase of talent, featuring touch rugby, rugby nines, and rugby sevens. This event aims to highlight the distinctive brilliance of Fijian sportsmanship and promises a thrilling experience for participants and spectators alike.
Participants from near and far will gather to compete for a total prize pool of $50,000. Emphasizing community spirit, the tournament provides a platform for fans to support their favorite teams while also engaging in local initiatives.
Richard Henry, the director of Tourism HQ, shared that the touch rugby segment has generated significant interest, with 150 teams vying for just 24 spots. In rugby nines, which is played with nine players on each side, there will be men’s and open women’s categories. Plans are in motion to expand the competition to include an under-23 women’s division, aiming to create opportunities leading to the NRL Women’s competition, as well as a legends division for veteran players.
Rugby sevens will also be a highlight of the cup, partnering with the Nadroga Rugby Union to feature competitions in the open men’s and women’s divisions, the legends division, and an under-85s category.
The tournament is scheduled to take place throughout November, starting with touch rugby on the 16th, followed by rugby sevens on the 23rd and rugby nines on the 30th, all held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
For those interested, tickets can be purchased on Ticketmate. The first 1,000 attendees will receive a complimentary pair of sunglasses, adding to the festive atmosphere.
This event not only supports the athletic aspirations of many Fijians but also fosters community spirit and engagement, promising a vibrant and memorable experience for all involved.
