At the peak of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, Ragina Devi and Davinash Naicker displayed their resilience and determination by successfully summiting the 5,895-meter peak amidst bitterly cold temperatures reaching -23°C. The couple from New Zealand undertook this challenge potentially becoming the first Fijian couple to reach the summit together as husband and wife. Their ascent took place on June 22, 2025, and they proudly waved Fiji’s flag to celebrate their remarkable achievement.
The couple faced significant challenges, as the trek is known to last between five to nine days and involves traversing five distinct climate zones including farmland, rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic ice. Each year, this popular trekking destination attracts 30,000 to 50,000 climbers, compelling those like the Naickers to push their limits. “Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro was both challenging and rewarding,” they reflected post-summit.
They described the grueling summit night, stating, “We started our ascent at 11 PM and battled fatigue, bitter cold, and low oxygen levels.” This critical push to the summit, typically regarded as the most demanding segment of the climb, required both physical strength and mental fortitude, culminating in an emotional moment as they reached the peak just in time for sunrise.
Over the last eight years, the Naickers have also tackled some of New Zealand’s most challenging trails, including the notable Tongariro Crossing and the Routeburn Track, but maintained that none compared to their Kilimanjaro journey.
“Despite the steep inclines and rocky paths, the breathtaking scenery we encountered made the effort worthwhile,” they noted. The completion of this trek not only represents a significant personal milestone for the couple but serves as a beacon of motivation for others to embrace adventure and the outdoors.
Looking ahead, the couple plans to continue exploring New Zealand’s renowned hiking trails with family, expressing their excitement for future adventures. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of climbing and exploration which fosters personal growth, strengthens connections with nature, and builds resilience.
This narrative demonstrates how pursuing challenges can lead to remarkable achievements and serve as inspiration for others, highlighting the importance of setting and accomplishing personal goals.
