The Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has stated that he has not received any information regarding issues that would necessitate an investigation into his leadership. Dr. Nakarawa’s comments come in response to Justice Minister Siromi Turaga’s announcement about serious concerns and potential breaches within the FCS, which he claimed warranted immediate investigation.

According to Dr. Nakarawa, the Corrections Act does not give the Justice Minister the authority to place a Constitutional Officer holder on leave, and he emphasized the importance of natural justice, which requires him to be informed of the allegations against him and to have the opportunity to respond accordingly.

While he acknowledged receiving a letter from the Minister that mentioned the possibility of a committee being appointed to evaluate certain matters, he reiterated that he has not been made aware of any issues that would justify such a probe. Dr. Nakarawa plans to prepare a formal response to the Minister’s letter while also looking into other avenues to address the situation.

This situation highlights the need for transparent communication and due process, particularly in matters concerning the governance of correctional services. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of procedural fairness in any investigations that may disrupt the leadership within essential services.

Summary: Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, refutes claims made by Justice Minister Siromi Turaga about serious breaches within the service. He emphasizes the lack of communication regarding allegations and expresses intent to respond formally while exploring further options for addressing the situation.

This incident reflects a significant concern about governance and oversight in correctional facilities, but with open dialogue and adherence to legal protocols, it is possible for the issues to be resolved constructively.
