A seasoned Fijian conservationist with over three decades of expertise in environmental management has been appointed to lead the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Oceania Regional Office. Susana Lomani Waqainabete-Tuisese will assume the role of regional director at the Suva-based office, coinciding with a pivotal moment when Pacific Island nations intensify initiatives to safeguard biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable development.
The IUCN’s announcement of Ms. Waqainabete-Tuisese’s appointment reflects the organization’s commitment to empowering Pacific-led leadership and strengthening regional alliances. Her extensive background includes serving as vice president and senior director for the Pacific Islands Ocean Programme at Conservation International, where she was instrumental in developing strategies and fostering partnerships across various Pacific nations.
Additionally, Ms. Waqainabete-Tuisese has held a significant leadership role as Fiji Country Programme Director for the same organization, along with experience as the Conservator of Forests within the Ministry of Forestry. Her career also includes contributions to Fiji’s pine industry, showcasing her diverse expertise in environmental management.
IUCN Director-General Dr. Grethel Aguilar expressed enthusiasm for the appointment, noting that Ms. Waqainabete-Tuisese brings invaluable regional insight and strategic leadership capabilities to her new position. “Under her guidance, I am confident that IUCN Oceania will enhance collaboration with our members, governments, and partners,” Dr. Aguilar stated.
