Fijian boxer Sera Bolatini made history on Saturday night by winning the WBA (World Boxing Association) super welterweight Oceania title, making her the first Fijian woman to achieve this milestone. Bolatini, 24, faced off against Australian competitor Connie Chan at the Vodafone Arena in Suva, securing a victory by unanimous points decision.

Bolatini expressed her gratitude towards her coach, Osea Nanovu, her Boxing Brave Club, and her family for their unwavering support. Reflecting on her strategy during the fight, she mentioned, “I made some side steps to distract her and also to tire her out – those were some skills I did.” She also added, “I thank God for His plans on me and for this win.” Her faith and preparation were evident as she entered the ring with confidence in her ability to win.

Bolatini transitioned to boxing after a career in rugby, where she previously played for the Fijiana 7s team and Fijiana Drua. Although she had lost her first two professional bouts, she emphasized the importance of learning and growth, leading her to a remarkable triumph at this championship.

The event was not only significant for Bolatini personally but also marked a pivotal moment in the promotion of women’s boxing in Fiji, which is witnessing increased representation and support. Her father, Navitalai Seu, proudly stated, “She is always soft spoken but she is talented… We are proud of her; proud moment for our family being the first to achieve this in boxing.”

With her victory, Bolatini’s journey serves to inspire many young athletes and reflects a burgeoning interest in women’s sports in the region. As she looks toward her future, she mentioned, “I’ll leave it to God and His plans,” embodying a sense of hope and optimism for what lies ahead.

This victory not only elevates Bolatini in the boxing community but also highlights the growing opportunities and recognition for female athletes in Fiji, paving the way for future generations in the sport.
