Fifteen overseas-based players from Australia, New Zealand, and the UK have been included in the 35-member Baby Pearls squad as they gear up for the Netball World Youth Cup (NWYC) in Gibraltar this September. Among these players is Hana Sotutu, daughter of former Blues and national representative Waisake Sotutu, and younger sister to Blues no.8 Hoskins Sotutu.
Other notable players in the squad include New Zealand-based Mikayla Daunakamakama and Eseta Waqaira, while Ateca Smith represents the UK. These overseas athletes have shown their dedication to Fijian netball by actively participating in various competitive leagues.
Local players are currently training under assistant coach Vaiti Waqatabu, while the entire squad will engage in intensive cross-training camps and tournaments both locally and internationally leading up to the NWYC. Head coach Simone Nalatu expressed enthusiasm for this combination of local talent and overseas commitment, indicating a bright future for Fijian netball.
The local team is set to begin a five-day training camp on April 8, with a 15-member traveling squad to be named after this camp. They will participate in the Ruby North Series from April 23 to 28, which will provide them critical match experience as they prepare for the world stage.
Netball Fiji has also emphasized gratitude for the continuous support from the PacificAusSports program, sponsors, and fans, which is instrumental in their preparations for the World Youth Cup. This collective effort showcases the growth and depth of talent in Fijian netball and marks a hopeful future for aspiring netball players in the region. With determination and hard work, the Baby Pearls aim to leave a lasting impact and inspire the next generation in the sport.
