Two exceptional Fijian athletes, Waisale Inoke and Joana Vakasobuduru, have made history with impressive performances that have set new national records in their respective events. Inoke, a former champion from MGM High School, reached new heights at the Region VI/KJCCC Indoor Track & Field Championships, establishing a national indoor record in the heptathlon with a score of 4,636 points, surpassing his previous record by a significant margin just a week earlier.
On the women’s side, Vakasobuduru, a former sprinter from Sigatoka Methodist High School, broke the existing women’s 200m indoor record at the Championships/Heart of America Championships, finishing with a remarkable time of 25.04 seconds, which eclipsed the record held by Sisilia Seavula.
These achievements underscore the burgeoning talent emerging from Fiji and highlight the dedication and hard work of these young athletes. In a similar vein, former Balata High School student Rusiate Matai recently made headlines by breaking a national record in the men’s high jump, exemplifying the growing momentum in Fijian athletics.
The accomplishments of Inoke and Vakasobuduru not only serve as inspiration for their peers but also represent a hopeful future for athletics in Fiji. As they continue to excel on international platforms, their successes may pave the way for further advancements in the sport within the country. With dedication to training and competition, these athletes are contributing positively to Fiji’s sporting legacy and fostering a sense of national pride.
