Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection, has issued a strong call to Fiji’s youth to remain connected to their cultural identity and values as they pursue educational and career opportunities. Speaking at an awareness event for the Naitasiri Tertiary Students Association at Fiji National University’s Namaka Campus, Minister Kiran emphasized the importance of preserving the spirit of one’s Vanua or community heritage as a source of strength and resilience.
Addressing the pressing issues faced by today’s youth, Minister Kiran highlighted concerns over mental health, the pressures of peer influence, substance abuse, and the growing threats posed by online violence. She particularly emphasized the detrimental effects of methamphetamine use, which she described as undermining potential and clouding judgment, leading to risky behaviors. In a bid to counter these challenges, she encouraged the student association to create peer support systems to foster sharing and resilience among students.
The importance of upholding family values was also a focal point of her address. Minister Kiran urged students to take responsibility within family life to address the declining family values, a growing concern within society. “In pursuing success, we must not overlook our greatest legacy—our responsibility to our families, children, and communities,” she asserted.
Drawing parallels with past initiatives and statements, Minister Kiran’s message aligns with broader governmental efforts to tackle various societal challenges through collective action. Similar to calls for community engagement in fighting issues like drug abuse and promoting family time by other government officials, her speech reinforces the idea that young individuals can be instrumental in fostering a generation rooted in responsibility, resilience, and cultural pride.
By anchoring her remarks in the shared values and cultural heritage of Fiji, Minister Kiran presents a hopeful vision for the nation’s future, aiming to inspire today’s youth to contribute positively to their communities and society at large. Her encouragement for peer support and maintaining familial ties underscores a proactive approach to nurturing a safe and supportive environment for the upcoming generations.
