Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, chair of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), addressed the youth at the Blue Light International Youth Event in Suva, urging them to confront challenges with humility, discipline, and a sense of service. He emphasized that young people are not just the leaders of tomorrow but are essential influencers in shaping Fiji’s future today, with their decisions and values significantly impacting the nation.
During his remarks, Ratu Viliame praised the Fiji Police Force and their collaboration with New Zealand counterparts for their ongoing efforts in youth empowerment through the Blue Light programme. This initiative aims to instill respect, civic responsibility, and leadership among the youth, contributing to the formation of a supportive community environment.
He highlighted the essence of true leadership, which he believes is rooted in service, humility, and vision. Ratu Viliame called on the youth to embody these values to fortify their communities. Recognizing the myriad challenges confronting today’s youth—ranging from unemployment and substance abuse to mental health issues—he stressed the need for understanding and collective support rather than criticism.
In pursuit of fostering youth leadership, Ratu Viliame revealed that the GCC is launching initiatives such as the Vanua Leadership Diploma Programme. This 12-month training program is designed to fuse traditional leadership principles with modern governance skills, thereby nurturing a new generation of leaders who are deeply grounded in the cultural values of respect and service while being equipped to address contemporary realities.
He further reminded attendees that the strength of Fiji’s youth lies within the community’s three pillars: the Vanua, the church, and the family. Collaboration among these entities is vital to cultivate moral and faith-based leadership. Ratu Viliame emphasized the importance of unity across Fiji’s diverse communities, noting that the country thrives on its ability to celebrate differences while working collectively for the common good.
The hopeful message from the Great Council of Chiefs resonates with ongoing discussions about leadership, community responsibility, and youth empowerment, reinforcing the potential for positive change in Fiji’s social landscape. By fostering these ideals, there is a promising outlook for the development and cohesion of Fiji’s communities.
