Fiji Young Kulas Set to Make History at FIFA World Cup

The Fiji Young Kulas are set to make history tomorrow as they take to the field in Colombia, becoming the first Fijian women’s team to participate in a FIFA World Cup event. Coached by Angeline Chua, the team will face off against powerhouse Brazil at Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín.

The group stage presents a challenging start for Fiji, as they are placed in Group B alongside Brazil, France, and Canada. Assistant coach Annette Nainima expressed that the team is both “excited and nervous” for this significant challenge.

“For most of the players, they have only ever watched the Women’s Under-20 World Cup on television, cheering for their favorite teams. Now, they get the chance to play against teams like Brazil and Canada, which is a monumental opportunity for them,” she said.

Fiji’s journey to the World Cup began in October after FIFA increased the U-20 Women’s World Cup format to include 24 teams. The team previously finished as runners-up to New Zealand in the 2023 OFC U-19 Women’s Championship held in July, which initially secured one World Cup spot for the OFC. The expansion now allows Fiji to compete in Colombia alongside New Zealand.

Nainima noted the tremendous support from their federation back home, highlighting the CEO’s enthusiasm in ensuring the team had the best resources available for their preparation.

The Young Kulas have undertaken an extensive preparation regimen, with a training camp in Canberra and friendly matches in the United States and Costa Rica. Nainima described the experience as an “eye-opening” education for the players, exposing them to different playing styles from various teams around the world.

The players were amazed by the level of professionalism displayed by international teams, noting the extensive coaching staff that accompanies them. “Seeing teams with so many coaches and support staff was shocking for the girls, especially coming from a small country like Fiji,” Nainima added.

Most members of the Young Kulas are based in Fiji and are part of the senior national squad for the upcoming Olympic Qualifying Tournament. In addition, Fiji has incorporated talents from the Fijian diaspora in the U.S., including 15-year-old goalkeeper Aliana Vakaloloma and Fullerton Titans’ player Talei Moodie.

Nainima mentioned that the coaching staff was mindful of integrating the new players, particularly Moodie who joined the team later than others. However, the transition proved smooth. “When we met her at the airport, it felt like the girls had known her forever. They quickly bonded, sharing stories and singing together. She has brought a lot to the team,” Nainima remarked.

Fiji’s first World Cup match against Brazil is scheduled for 11 AM on Sunday, September 1, followed by matches against Canada at 1 PM on Wednesday, September 4, and France at 10 AM on Saturday, September 7, all in Fiji time.
