Fiji Women’s U20 Team Takes on the World: A Historic Journey Begins

The Fiji Under-20 women’s football team officially presented the traditional i-tatau to President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere at the State House in Suva on Friday, ahead of their participation in the FIFA World U20 Championship.

The President acknowledged the team’s accomplishments and expressed gratitude for the efforts of the coaches, management, and the young athletes. He emphasized that this is a significant milestone, marking the first time Fiji has a women’s team competing at such a prestigious event in Colombia, calling it a commendable endeavor.

Fiji, known for its rugby prowess, is now gaining global recognition through its advancements in football. Ratu Wiliame remarked that Fiji has continually “punched above its weight” in the sporting arena, especially in notable international competitions.

He highlighted the country’s remarkable success in tournaments like sevens rugby and noted that the achievements of the women’s football team represent an exciting new chapter in Fiji’s sports history. However, he acknowledged the obstacles the team faces, including limited funding, infrastructure, and facilities.

Ratu Wiliame praised the coaching and management staff for their unwavering commitment to preparing the team mentally and physically. He conveyed his admiration for their efforts, stating, “What you have done is something else.”

The Head of State also recognized the sacrifices made by the players and their families, while commending team manager Naziah Ali-Krishna for her vital role. He assured the team that they would continue to receive support and prayers as they prepare to represent Fiji.

The Fiji U20 women’s team is set to compete in Group B against France, Canada, and Brazil. This tournament marks a significant achievement for Fiji, showcasing the growth of women’s football in the nation and is expected to inspire future generations of athletes while uniting the country in support of their team on the global stage.
