Fiji Women’s Rugby Sevens Team Set for New Coach Ahead of 2025 Challenge

A new coach for the Fijiana women’s rugby sevens team will be appointed at the beginning of 2025. This announcement was made by Fiji Rugby Union interim Trustees chairman Peter Mazey, who stated that a head coach will be selected for the women’s sevens team in preparation for the 2025 HSBC SVNS Series.

Saiasi Fuli’s contract as head coach is set to conclude in December. Mazey mentioned that after extensive discussions with Fuli, the decision was made to advertise the head coach position, which will be announced in the media soon.

The Fiji Rugby Union is actively seeking the best candidate to guide the women’s team into its next phase. The new coach will be responsible for establishing and executing a high-performance strategy to facilitate the selection of a new team.

Following the conclusion of the Olympics, all current contracts for women’s sevens players have expired, with the exception of Younis Bese and Heleina Young, who are still under contract until the end of the year.

Fuli expressed his gratitude to the Fiji Rugby Union for the opportunity to coach the national women’s sevens team. He acknowledged the challenges he faced transitioning from coaching men’s teams to guiding the women’s side, where he had served as an assistant coach to Gareth Baber before taking the helm to bring the team back from relegation.

In a related development, Osea Kolinisau will retain his position as head coach of the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team for the next four years, as confirmed by Mazey. He praised Kolinisau’s impressive results over recent months, showcasing his capability and vision for the future. Mazey stated that Kolinisau’s primary goal is to secure a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.
