Fiji Women’s Rugby Sevens Captain Reveals Shocking Truth

Team Fiji rugby women’s sevens captain Raijeli Daveua acknowledged that the players were not mentally prepared, resulting in a disappointing performance at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Daveua candidly discussed the team’s challenges, highlighting especially the unforeseen losses to China and Brazil. The team, previously a bronze medalist in Tokyo three years ago, found themselves contending for an 11th/12th place finish in Paris.

“Our fitness was there, but it was essential for each player to be mentally prepared for the task,” Daveua remarked.

“When we arrived at the games village, it was each individual’s responsibility to psych themselves up.”

Participating in her third Olympics, Daveua admitted the results were difficult to accept.

“The coaches did their jobs; it came down to the players and their mental preparation,” she noted.

“As captain, I saw the lack of mental toughness. You have to psych yourself up, reflect on individual improvements, and rise to the occasion. This is the Olympics; there’s no room for excuses. We knew what we needed to do and had to get the small details right. It’s been a painful experience for our supporters back home. Thank you for your support—this is not the end.”

The experience in Paris has been a significant wake-up call for the team.

“Teamwork and obedience were key expectations. If you see yourself as a star, you must humble yourself. Acting independently doesn’t benefit you or the team,” Daveua, who is also a Fiji Corrections Service officer, explained.

“Our biggest takeaway is that we thought too highly of ourselves and were met with a reality check. The players have certainly learned the importance of humility.”

The Fijiana 7s faced South Africa in the 11th/12th place playoff this morning.
