Minister of Youth and Sport Jese Saukuru has assured that the Fijian women’s sevens team will receive ample support as they prepare for the upcoming Dubai Sevens tournament. His comments followed the team’s presentation of their i-tatau at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva.

Saukuru praised women’s rugby as a remarkable success story, highlighting its unprecedented global growth. He pointed out that the sport represents a significant opportunity for expansion in the next decade. With initiatives like the Women in Rugby brand and the inspiring “Try and Stop Us” campaign, female participation in rugby has reached an impressive 2.7 million players worldwide, reflecting a 28 percent increase since 2017.

However, he acknowledged the historical challenges faced by women rugby players in Fiji, including societal disapproval and familial ostracism. Many players have made considerable sacrifices in the early days of the sport, showing unwavering commitment and passion despite the obstacles.

Saukuru announced that the government has allocated over $4.2 million in the current budget to support rugby in Fiji, reinforcing their dedication to nurturing talent at all levels. He encouraged the team to remember that the people of Fiji are behind them, carrying the nation’s hopes and dreams as they face upcoming challenges.

The Fijiana women’s sevens team is set to depart for Dubai on Sunday, where they will compete in Pool A against Ireland, China, and Australia.
