The Fiji women’s hockey team showcased a dominant performance during their first match of the Oceania Pacific Cup, achieving an impressive 9-1 victory over Samoa at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Head coach Alison Southey expressed her satisfaction with the team’s display, which included several skilled players who previously competed in both the Pacific Games and the World Cup in Oman.
Featured among the experienced players are Catherine Fabiano, Divyankar Kumar, Melba Nautu, and Maxine Edwards. Southey emphasized the positive momentum that comes with winning, stating, “It’s always good going into a tournament winning.” She conveyed a sense of optimism as the team focuses on taking one game at a time and applying what they’ve learned in training to their matches.
Southey noted the importance of showcasing local talent, mentioning that the four-day tournament would highlight both emerging athletes and debutants. With the inclusion of two teams from Fiji—Fiji and Fiji Warriors—the tournament offers invaluable exposure for local players.
While praising their offensive capabilities, Southey acknowledged the need for improvement in defense to tighten their gameplay further. She highlighted that several players on the team have valuable experience from their participation in prior competitions. After their victory over Samoa, the Fiji women prepared to face Tonga in their next match.
The tournament features seven countries and 16 teams competing in both men’s and women’s categories, culminating on Thursday.
This strong start for Fiji’s women’s team not only enhances the excitement surrounding the tournament but also fuels hope for further success as the competition progresses. With a focus on building on their achievements, they stand poised to continue their journey in the Oceania Pacific Cup.
