The Fiji women’s hockey team showcased an impressive performance in their first match at the Oceania Pacific Cup, defeating Samoa by a staggering score of 9-1 at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Head coach Alison Southey expressed her satisfaction with the team’s efforts, highlighting the experience of several key players who previously participated in the Pacific Games and the World Cup in Oman. Notable players such as Catherine Fabiano, Divyankar Kumar, Melba Nautu, and Maxine Edwards were pivotal in the team’s success.

“It’s always encouraging to start a tournament with a win,” Southey commented. “We remain optimistic and are focused on taking one game at a time, ensuring that we implement everything we’ve practiced in our training sessions.”

Southey noted that adherence to their game plan was crucial, attributing the team’s preparation over the past months to their victory. She also emphasized that the four-day tournament serves as a platform for showcasing local talent, including rising stars and debutants. Both the men’s and women’s teams of Fiji have entered two squads into the competition—Fiji and Fiji Warriors.

While celebrating their victory, Southey acknowledged that there is room for improvement, particularly in defense, suggesting that tightening their defensive play will enhance their chances moving forward. The tournament, featuring seven countries and 16 teams competing in both men’s and women’s categories, is set to conclude on Thursday, providing ample opportunities for teams to shine.

The Fiji women’s team is eagerly looking ahead to their next match against Tonga, indicating a strong and hopeful spirit for the remainder of the tournament.

This remarkable success not only boosts the team’s morale but serves as an inspiration for the growth of hockey in Fiji, encouraging young athletes to aspire to higher levels of competition and skill. The ongoing tournament demonstrates the strength and competitive spirit present in the region, with Fiji at the forefront.
