The Fiji women’s hockey team achieved a remarkable victory with a 9-1 triumph over Samoa in their first match of the Oceania Pacific Cup, held at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Head coach Alison Southey expressed satisfaction with her team’s performance, highlighting the presence of seasoned players who have previously taken part in significant events such as the Pacific Games and the World Cup in Oman. Players like Catherine Fabiano, Divyankar Kumar, Melba Nautu, and Maxine Edwards have brought valuable experience to the squad, allowing the team to enter the tournament with hope and confidence.

“It’s always good going into a tournament with a win,” Southey remarked. She emphasized the team’s focus on taking one game at a time and applying everything learned during training. The commitment and hard work of the players over the past months were evident, and the team adhered well to their game plan.

Southey noted that the upcoming four-day tournament would be an excellent opportunity to display the skills of not just the established players but also the emerging talents and newcomers in the team. Both the Fiji men’s and women’s teams are represented by two squads—Fiji and Fiji Warriors—which is seen as beneficial for local athletes’ exposure.

She also mentioned the necessity for improvement, particularly in defense, stating that tightening their defensive structure could enhance the team’s overall performance. With several players having participated in the Pacific Games and World Cup, Fiji’s program is clearly fostering a pipeline of skilled hockey players.

As the tournament progresses, the Fiji women’s team faced Tonga in their second match the same day. The competition features seven countries and a total of 16 teams participating, culminating in a final showdown on Thursday.

This victory not only sets a positive tone for Fiji’s campaign in the Oceania Pacific Cup but also reflects the country’s commitment to promoting women’s sports at a competitive level.

Hopeful commentary: The impressive opening performance promises an exciting future for the Fiji women’s hockey team, showcasing their growth and determination on the international stage. Fans can look forward to their journey in this tournament and their potential to make lasting impacts in the sport.
