The Fiji senior women’s football team is preparing for two important international friendlies against Papua New Guinea, scheduled for May 30 and June 2. Center back Ema Mereia, a promising 19-year-old player from Cakaudrove, emphasizes the team’s strategy to disrupt Papua New Guinea’s fast-paced play rather than trying to match it directly. This approach reflects a tactical shift to control the rhythm of the game.

Mereia, a recent addition to the national team after her under-19 selection, believes that teamwork and effective communication are vital for their success. Training sessions have focused on enhancing build-up play from the back and implementing strategies that play to their strengths.

“Everyone knows what they need to do. The game plan is already laid out; now it’s just time to put everything into action,” noted Mereia, indicating that the squad’s preparation has been thorough and promising. These matches serve as essential preparation for the OFC Women’s Nations Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 qualifiers.

Further building on this sentiment, teammate Adi Litia Bakaniceva had previously spoken about the importance of communication and teamwork, emphasizing that adapting to the quick pace of PNG football will be crucial for adapting their gameplay. Meanwhile, Maria Veronika highlighted the need for maintaining possession and using stamina to outlast their competitors.

This camaraderie and shared resolve create a hopeful atmosphere around the Fiji Kulas as they aim to showcase their growth and competitive spirit on the international stage. With community support and a strong foundation of teamwork, the Fiji women’s football team is poised for an exciting future in the sport.
