Fiji’s women’s football team has advanced toward a semi-final position in the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2025, following a decisive 3-0 victory over Tonga at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Tuesday night. The match showcased Fiji’s strength, although it was a hard-fought contest with Tonga putting up commendable resistance.

Key player Cema Nasau opened the scoring for Fiji in the 30th minute with a powerful header from a corner kick, marking her 10th goal in the tournament’s history. Despite Fiji dominating the first half, they struggled to capitalize on other scoring opportunities, with Anisha Dwarka and Narieta Leba both missing key chances that could have extended their lead.

Tonga, eager to improve after a previous heavy defeat to Vanuatu, showed some determination, nearly equalizing just before halftime with Gabriela Filimoetau’s shot that skimmed over the bar. However, Fiji’s defense, along with goalkeeper Ka’iulani Scott’s crucial saves, ensured they maintained control of the match.

In the latter half, tactical changes from coach Angeline Chua paid off, as Sereana Naweni skillfully rounded the Tongan goalkeeper to double Fiji’s lead in the 80th minute. Ruci Tabunase then capped off the victory with a goal in stoppage time.

With this win, the Fiji Kulas now lead Group B with two victories from two matches and only need a draw against Vanuatu in their next match to secure first place, setting a hopeful tone as they push for semi-final advancement.

The team’s resilience and performance underscore a growing momentum in women’s football within the region, fostering excitement among fans and offering inspiration for aspiring female athletes in Fiji. As the tournament progresses, Fiji aims to build on this success and continue to uplift women’s sports in the country.
