Fiji Women’s Cricket Team Shines in Pacific Championship Triumph!

The Fiji senior women’s cricket team has proudly returned home after clinching third place at the Pacific France T20I Women’s Championship held in New Caledonia. Although their tournament began with two early losses, the team showcased impressive resilience and determination, culminating in a thrilling victory against France in a super over match.

Head coach Joeli Mateyawa praised the team’s growth, pointing out their enhanced performance compared to the previous year. “They have developed as a team, showing more cohesion and understanding of each other’s skill level,” he stated. This growth was especially notable during their unique preparation phase, which involved training on National Hockey turf in Laucala due to the closure of the Albert Park cricket pitch. The team adeptly adjusted to the challenges presented in Noumea after encountering initial setbacks.

Team manager Adi Mereoni Uluiviti expressed pride in the newcomers, highlighting their maturity and ability to face seasoned opponents. “They didn’t shy away from the challenge of competing against older and more experienced rivals,” she noted. Captain Ilisapeci Waqavakatoga’s leadership was instrumental in maintaining team morale during difficult moments, with Uluiviti applauding her exemplary leadership skills.
