The Fiji Women’s 7s team faced a challenging start to their season at the SVNS tournament in Dubai, finishing in last place without securing a victory. Under the guidance of coach Timoci Volavola, Fiji lost their match against Spain with a score of 5-22 during the playoff for 11th and 12th places. The team’s only try was scored by Milika Drugunavanua.
In contrast, the tournament saw Australia triumph over New Zealand with a close score of 28-24, crowning them champions of the Dubai 7s. The Australian team showcased their strength by defeating Great Britain 35-7 in the semifinals and overwhelming Canada 39-0 in the quarterfinals, with standout performances including five tries by Maddison Levi.
Additionally, the USA secured a 5th place finish by overcoming Ireland 17-7, while Japan claimed the 7th spot with a narrow win over Canada at 24-22.
While the Fiji Women’s team faced disappointment, this experience could serve as a valuable learning opportunity as they regroup and prepare for upcoming competitions. With potential for growth and improvement, there is hope that they can bounce back and achieve better results in future tournaments.
