Fiji Woman’s Life Transformed by Generous Medical Team

A 62-year-old grandmother, Amla Wati, expressed her gratitude to the Friends of Fiji Health charitable organization from New Zealand, which significantly improved her quality of life following her recent surgery. The organization, composed of doctors, nurses, and support staff, has been performing complex operations at the Labasa Divisional Hospital since last Friday.

Ms. Wati, a resident of Korovatu in Labasa, underwent gallbladder stone removal on Wednesday. She shared that she had been suffering from pain for two months and was relieved upon learning that a team of medical specialists from abroad was coming to perform surgeries.

“I was initially scared about the operation, but I am incredibly grateful to the team for their care,” said Ms. Wati. “They were gentle and friendly, and I feel healthy again thanks to both the international and local surgeons who performed the procedure.”

The operation lasted two hours, and she is now in recovery at the hospital. “I can’t wait to tell my community about how these remarkable doctors have transformed my life,” she added, noting that such surgeries can be costly at her age. “I am thankful that this service was provided free of charge.”

Hazeem Hussein, chairperson of the Labasa Hospital Board of Visitors, emphasized the importance of operations that alleviate pain, describing them as a commendable act. He acknowledged the dedication of the medical team, who selflessly gave their time to assist patients with complex needs.

The Friends of Fiji Health team is scheduled to return to New Zealand this week, and Mr. Hussein expressed hope for future visits from the organization.
