Fiji Welcomes Volunteers to Strengthen Rural Healthcare

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Youth with a Mission (YWAM) New Zealand, allowing volunteer healthcare professionals from New Zealand to serve in Fiji’s rural and maritime regions.

Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu announced in Parliament that the Cabinet approved the 10-year agreement on August 4 and 7. He stated that this partnership will aid the Ministry in delivering services and achieving universal health coverage, particularly for hard-to-reach populations.

Dr. Lalabalavu mentioned that YWAM volunteers will arrive by ship and support the Ministry’s initiatives. The primary healthcare services offered by the team include awareness campaigns, screenings, and dental care.

Looking ahead, he emphasized the need to improve processes related to registration, procurement, and customs for these volunteers. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing collaboration, which has persisted through various government administrations, highlighting its importance in providing essential primary healthcare in maritime areas.

When questioned about potentially waiving the temporary registration fees required by the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for these volunteers providing free services, Dr. Lalabalavu indicated that the Ministry would consider this request.

He noted that many of the visiting teams are familiar faces returning each year, and the Ministry would explore options to facilitate their contributions more effectively.
