Fiji Welcomes Olympic Star and Newcomer to Rugby Squad

Fiji’s Olympic Games silver medallist Ponipate Loganimasi and New Zealand-based Penaia Cakobau have been added to the FIJI Water Flying Fijians squad. Assistant coach Aaron Mauger made this announcement during an interview in Tonga.

Loganimasi and Cakobau joined the team’s training last week, filling in at wing and hooker, respectively. Selestino Ravutaumada is recovering from surgery in Australia, and Kavaia Tagivetaua has withdrawn from the squad.

Mauger remarked, “We’ve got replacements in with Ponipate Loganimasi from the 7s team, who trained with the squad last week, and Penaia Cakobau, who came in from North Harbour, so he’s with this team for the first time.” Cakobau plays as a hooker with the Bunnings NPC team in North Harbour, New Zealand.

Mauger also noted that the match-day squad for the Asahi Super Dry Pacific Nations Cup match against Tonga is fully fit and well-prepared to improve on their previous performance against Samoa. Fiji is set to face Tonga at 3pm on Friday.
