Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, traveled to Australia on Thursday to officially receive a replacement vessel for the $18 million Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Navy Ship, RFNS Puamau, which has been decommissioned. The original ship ran aground on Fulaga Reef in Lau on June 10, shortly after being donated by the Australian government.
The new vessel, a Guardian-class patrol boat named RFNS Timo, will enhance Fiji’s maritime capabilities. Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that the addition of this boat bolsters Fiji’s ability to secure its waters, protect its natural resources, and contribute to regional security. He highlighted this development as a reflection of the strong partnership and common commitment shared between Fiji and Australia.
This replacement is a significant step forward in enhancing Fiji’s maritime security and cooperation with Australia, indicating a shared interest in maintaining peace and safety in the region.
In summary, the acquisition of the RFNS Timo is not only vital for the operational capacity of Fiji’s naval forces but also symbolizes the positive and collaborative relationship between Fiji and Australia, emphasizing the importance of maritime security for both nations.
