The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, traveled to Australia on Thursday to officially receive a replacement for the decommissioned $18 million Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Navy Ship, the RFNS Puamau. The original vessel tragically ran aground on Fulaga Reef, Lau, during a routine voyage on June 10, shortly after it was donated to Fiji by the Australian government.
The new addition to Fiji’s maritime fleet is a Guardian-class patrol boat named RFNS Timo. Minister Tikoduadua expressed that this new vessel will significantly enhance Fiji’s capacity to protect its waters, safeguard natural resources, and support regional security initiatives. He emphasized that the successful acquisition of the RFNS Timo underscores the strong and enduring partnership between Fiji and Australia, reflecting their mutual commitment to security and collaboration.
This positive development not only strengthens Fiji’s maritime capabilities but also symbolizes the importance of international cooperation in maintaining stability and security in the region.
