Retired Judge Justice Filimone Jitoko has been elected as the new Speaker of Fiji’s Parliament. He secured the position during a session this morning, garnering 34 votes in favor. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was instrumental in putting Jitoko’s name forward, with support from Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto.
In contrast, the Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu nominated former Deputy Speaker Ruveni Nadalo, who received 15 votes, backed by stand-alone Opposition MP Alvick Maharaj.
Justice Jitoko takes over the role from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who was recently appointed as the President of the Republic of Fiji Islands on October 31.
This election marks a significant transition in Fiji’s parliamentary leadership and reflects a collaborative political environment, with contributions from both the government and the opposition. It is a positive step towards strengthening democratic processes in the country, and Justice Jitoko’s extensive legal background may bring valuable insights to the legislative discussions ahead.
Overall, the election of Justice Jitoko signals a hopeful chapter for Fiji’s governance as the country moves forward with new leadership.
