Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs, traveled to Australia on Thursday to officially receive the replacement for the decommissioned $18 million Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Navy Ship, RFNS Puamau. This ship ran aground on Fulaga Reef in Lau during a routine voyage on June 10, just weeks after the Australian government had gifted it to Fiji.
The new vessel, named RFNS Timo, is a Guardian-class patrol boat and serves as a replacement for the lost ship. Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that incorporating the RFNS Timo into Fiji’s maritime fleet enhances the country’s capacity to secure its waters, protect its natural resources, and maintain regional security. He noted that this replacement symbolizes the strong partnership and mutual commitment shared between Fiji and Australia.
This development showcases not only the resilience of Fiji’s maritime operations but also highlights the ongoing collaboration between countries in bolstering security in the Pacific region. As Fiji receives the RFNS Timo, there is hope for improved maritime enforcement and environmental protection in the future, reinforcing the nation’s dedication to safeguarding its territorial waters.
