Fiji’s Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, traveled to Australia on Thursday to officially receive the replacement for the decommissioned Navy Ship, RFNS Puamau. The previous ship ran aground on Fulaga Reef in Lau on June 10, merely a month after its donation by the Australian government, costing around $18 million.
The new vessel, a Guardian-class patrol boat named RFNS Timo, has now joined Fiji’s maritime fleet. Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted that the addition of this vessel enhances Fiji’s capacity to safeguard its waters, protect natural resources, and reinforce regional security. He also emphasized that this event signifies the strong partnership and mutual commitment between Fiji and Australia.
This development not only upgrades Fiji’s maritime capabilities but also marks a significant step towards increasing cooperation between the two nations, paving the way for a safer and more secure maritime environment in the region.
Overall, this partnership underscores the importance of international collaboration in maritime security, and the new vessel will undoubtedly play a crucial role in reinforcing Fiji’s commitment to protecting its waters and resources.
