Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has been elected as Fiji’s new President, succeeding the outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere. In a strong show of support from Parliament, Ratu Naiqama secured 37 of the 53 votes, defeating Opposition nominee Ratu Meli Tavaiqia, who received 16 votes.

Following the election, Ratu Naiqama received congratulations from the Coalition Government members as well as nine Opposition members who supported his nomination. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressed confidence in Ratu Naiqama, stating that his selection reflects the backing from his Coalition partners and note that their role in Parliament also aligns with the will of the people.

Biman Prasad, leader of the National Federation Party and Deputy Prime Minister, emphasized that Ratu Naiqama’s presidency could serve as a unifying element for Fiji. He urged critics to move beyond past grievances and focus on building a more harmonious future. SODELPA Parliamentary leader Viliame Gavoka echoed this sentiment, highlighting Ratu Naiqama’s governance experience and potential to provide stability within the Parliament.

Ratu Naiqama is set to be officially sworn in on November 11, marking the beginning of his leadership.

This new leadership brings a sense of hope for continued strength and unity in Fiji’s political landscape, emphasizing the need for reconciliation and cooperation among the nation’s diverse voices.
