Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has been appointed as the new President of the Republic of Fiji Islands. The appointment followed a parliamentary vote where Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka put Ratu Naiqama’s name forward, while Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu nominated Ratu Meli Tora Tavaiqia.
In the voting process, Ratu Naiqama secured a significant majority with 37 votes, compared to Ratu Meli’s 16 votes. Ratu Naiqama is set to be officially sworn into office on November 12, 2024.
