Fiji Welcomes New Leadership in Vanuatu: A Step Towards Stronger Ties

Acting Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad has offered his congratulations to newly elected Prime Minister Jotham Napat following a snap election held last month in Vanuatu. In a letter of congratulations, Prasad reiterated Fiji’s ongoing commitment to collaborating with Vanuatu and neighboring Pacific nations to achieve shared objectives centered on regional peace, security, and prosperity.

Professor Prasad conveyed his optimism that under Prime Minister Napat’s leadership, the relationship and cooperation between Fiji and Vanuatu will reach new heights. He also wished the Vanuatu government and its people continued success and prosperity.

The diplomatic ties between Fiji and Vanuatu have seen significant strengthening over the years, fueled by common goals and initiatives that enhance the unity of the broader Pacific family.

Background information indicates that the election was prompted by the dissolution of Parliament by President Nikenike Vurobaravu, which occurred just before a no-confidence motion was set against former Prime Minister Charlot Salwai in November. Initially planned for January 14, the election was postponed to January 16 due to the impact of the 2024 Port Vila earthquake that struck on December 17, with over 300,000 registered voters participating in the election.

In summary, the collaboration between Fiji and Vanuatu signifies a positive and cooperative approach to governance in the Pacific region, fostering hope for enhanced mutual benefits and a strengthened community in the future.
