The Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, traveled to Australia on Thursday to officially receive a new Guardian-class patrol boat, RFNS Timo, which will serve as a replacement for the decommissioned $18 million Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Navy Ship, RFNS Puamau. The RFNS Puamau was unfortunately lost after it ran aground on Fulaga Reef in Lau during a routine voyage on June 10, shortly after its donation from the Australian government to Fiji.
Minister Tikoduadua emphasized that the addition of the RFNS Timo enhances Fiji’s maritime capabilities, allowing the country to better secure its waters, protect natural resources, and contribute to regional security. He highlighted the new vessel as a symbol of the strong partnership and commitment between Fiji and Australia.
This development not only reflects the resilience of Fiji’s maritime operations but also underscores the importance of international cooperation in ensuring regional stability and security. The introduction of the RFNS Timo promises to bolster Fiji’s efforts in safeguarding its maritime interests and demonstrates a positive step forward in both nations’ collaborative relationship.
Overall, this acquisition represents a hopeful advancement for Fiji’s naval capabilities, further supporting both national and regional security objectives.
