Fiji Welcomes Historic New Commissioner to Fight Corruption

The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has officially introduced its new Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, who is prepared to take on the leadership role within the Commission. Malimali has stepped down from her previous position as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, extending her best wishes to that body.

Malimali brings a wealth of experience as a criminal lawyer and has been appointed by President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere based on the recommendation of the Judicial Services Commission and in collaboration with the Office of the Attorney-General. Her term began yesterday and will last for three years.

Notably, Malimali is the first female to assume the role of Commissioner, following the resignation of the previous Commissioner, Rashmi Aslam, in September 2023. In her statements following her appointment, Malimali expressed her determination not to be swayed by recent events and affirmed her commitment to fulfilling her responsibilities as outlined by the law. She is looking forward to her new role at FICAC.
