Fiji Welcomes a Wave of Tourists: How Cruise Ship Arrivals Boost Local Economy

The Royal Princess cruise liner arrived at Lautoka Port last Saturday, bringing with it over 3,000 Australian tourists eager to explore Fiji. Teki Tours freelance guide George Hickes took a group of tourists on a guided excursion to Nadi and the nearby Viseisei Village, emphasizing the positive impact this cruise ship arrival has on local businesses.

“Businesses in Nadi and Lautoka reaped a good profit from this visit,” Hickes noted, as he observed numerous buses transporting tourists to enjoy various tours offered by Jet Set Town. He expressed happiness about being able to work as a tour guide, detailing how such opportunities give back to his community and ensure local businesses thrive.

Hickes, a retired driver who used to work with notable organizations like Sun Tours Fiji, shared his passion for guiding tourists. “To succeed as a tour guide, one needs to have a passion and love for their country,” he stated. This sentiment underlines the importance of engagement as an essential part of offering memorable experiences for visitors.

In addition to its stop in Lautoka, the Royal Princess also visited Suva the following day, creating opportunities for the tourists to experience the capital city’s rich offerings.

This continuous engagement with cruise liners signals hope for the tourism sector in Fiji, which is witnessing a resurgence as international interest increases. It showcases a promising future where local communities benefit, and tourists leave with fond memories of their experiences in Fiji.

As tourism rebounds, the excitement surrounding cruise ship arrivals contributes significantly to economic growth and revitalizes local pride in Fiji’s beautiful landscapes and cultural heritage.
