A total of 335 nurse interns are set to bolster the efforts of Fiji’s Health Ministry over the next 18 months. Currently, they are participating in a one-week induction program designed to prepare them for their clinical roles. During a motivational address to the interns, Acting Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Luisa Cikamatana Rauto emphasized that their selection reflects their potential contributions to the healthcare system.
Dr. Rauto highlighted that the upcoming 18 months will be pivotal for the interns’ professional growth as they transition from theoretical learning to practical applications. She stressed that nursing transcends being a mere profession, describing it instead as a calling that demands unwavering dedication and a readiness to respond to calls for service, regardless of personal circumstances.
This new cohort of nursing interns comes during a time when the Health Ministry is actively addressing concerns about an excess of medical interns in the country, as noted by Health Minister Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu. While there are growing numbers of young and enthusiastic interns, the ministry is focused on creating an environment that provides adequate training opportunities while managing the balance between available clinical supervisors and interns.
Efforts to improve health services, particularly in remote areas, are reflected in initiatives like the deployment of other interns to underserved communities for hands-on experience. The Health Ministry is also collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) to conduct a comprehensive workforce assessment, ensuring that the healthcare sector has the right mix of personnel to alleviate pressures and enhance service delivery.
This proactive approach illustrates the government’s commitment to fostering a capable and compassionate health workforce, ultimately aimed at creating a healthier future for the people of Fiji. The vital role that these nurse interns will play bodes well for the ongoing enhancement of health services across the nation.
