Weightlifting Fiji has recently celebrated a significant achievement by winning three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council’s 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ dedication and success, particularly noting their impressive medal tally at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the crucial role of government support, which has been instrumental in facilitating their progress. However, he also raised concerns about the ongoing funding challenges faced by the federation. He emphasized that adequate financial backing is essential for providing athletes with top-notch training facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance that could enhance their performance.

Elder also highlighted the need for improved medical support systems to better serve the athletes. He stressed the importance of expanding outreach efforts to discover and nurture talent across various provinces. He lauded the Fiji National Sports Commission for its support in organizing outreach programs that have successfully recruited new athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the Commonwealth Games in 2026. He revealed that preparations are already underway, with efforts to identify potential medal contenders. Elder believes that increasing participation in the sport and securing better financial resources will be key to achieving success on the international stage.

At the awards ceremony, Taniela Rainibogi was honored as the Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the Sportswoman of the Year award. Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the Young Male Athlete of the Year.

This recognition marks a promising chapter for Weightlifting Fiji, highlighting not only the athletes’ individual accomplishments but also the potential for growth and success in the future. With continued support and investment, the federation is poised to elevate its status within the sporting community and inspire the next generation of weightlifters.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji’s recent accolades reflect hard work and determination, with hopes for an even brighter future in competitive sports.
