Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a significant achievement recently, securing three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed his pride in the athletes’ performances, particularly their impressive medal collection at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder acknowledged the unwavering hard work and dedication of the athletes, attributing part of their success to the support received from the Government. However, he also highlighted funding as a recurring challenge for the federation, emphasizing that financial backing is crucial to equip athletes with high-quality training facilities and advanced technology.

The coach underscored the need for an enhanced medical support system and specialized resources, crucial for fostering the athletes’ development. There is a concerted effort to expand the sport into various provinces to tap into the untapped talent pool available in the country. The Fiji National Sports Commission has played a vital role in outreach initiatives, helping the federation discover new athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects for the Commonwealth Games in 2026. Preparations are already underway, with potential medal contenders being identified. He believes that increasing participant numbers and securing better financial support will significantly contribute to the growth of the sport.

At the FSC awards, Taniela Rainibogi was honored as the Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa was named Sportswoman of the Year. Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the Young Male Athlete of the Year, marking a triumphant moment for the federation.

In summary, Weightlifting Fiji’s recent accolades serve as a testament to their hard work and potential. With a focus on growth and improvement, the future looks promising as they continue to nurture talent and strive for excellence in upcoming competitions.
