Weightlifting Fiji recently celebrated a remarkable achievement by winning three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 Sports Awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the athletes’ performances, particularly their success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder highlighted the athletes’ dedication and hard work, expressing gratitude for the support received from the government, which has been instrumental in facilitating their achievements. However, he also pointed out that funding remains a challenge for the federation. To compete at the highest levels, they require better training facilities, advanced equipment, and expertise in specialized areas to assist both athletes and coaches.

Furthermore, Elder emphasized the importance of enhancing their medical support systems, which are crucial for the athletes’ well-being. He acknowledged the Fiji National Sports Commission’s efforts in outreach programs that have helped identify and recruit new talent from various provinces across Fiji, noting the abundance of potential athletes.

Looking ahead, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects for the Commonwealth Games in 2026. Preparations are already underway, with efforts to identify athletes capable of winning medals. He believes that a focus on increasing participant numbers and securing better financial backing will be essential for the future growth of the sport.

In recognition of their outstanding performances, Taniela Rainibogi was awarded the FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the Sportswoman of the Year honor. Additionally, Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the young male athlete of the year.

This renewed focus on growth and investment in talent bodes well for the future of Weightlifting Fiji, particularly as they aim to build on their successes and inspire a new generation of athletes.
