Weightlifting Fiji has celebrated a remarkable achievement by winning three awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards, highlighting their successful year. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the athletes’ performances and their recent medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder emphasized the significance of the athletes’ dedication and expressed gratitude for the support received from the government, which played a crucial role in their success. However, he noted that funding remains a challenge for the federation as it strives to provide the best resources for its athletes.

To compete at the highest level, Elder mentioned the necessity for better facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized assistance for both athletes and coaches. Additionally, he pointed out the need for a more robust medical support system to aid in the athletes’ development and well-being.

Elder also highlighted the importance of reaching out to various provinces to discover untapped talent. He acknowledged the Fiji National Sports Commission’s efforts in facilitating outreach programs that have successfully recruited new athletes for the sport.

Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Games in 2026, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects. He indicated that preparations have already begun and a few athletes have been identified as potential medal contenders. Elder remains focused on expanding participation in weightlifting and believes that increased financial support will be essential for achieving this goal.

During the FSC awards, notable recognition was given to individual athletes, with Taniela Rainibogi awarded Sportsman of the Year, Miriama Taletawa winning Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder receiving the title of Young Male Athlete of the Year.

This news highlights not only the achievements of Weightlifting Fiji but also the ongoing commitment to developing talent and securing necessary support for the future, fostering a strong foundation for upcoming competitions.
