Weightlifting Fiji celebrated a remarkable year, highlighted by their achievement of receiving three prestigious awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the athletes’ performance and their successful medal haul at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship.

Elder commended the dedication and effort displayed by the athletes and extended gratitude toward the government for their support, which has been crucial in facilitating these accomplishments. However, he noted that financial support remains a significant challenge for the federation.

“To compete at the highest level, we need funding to provide our athletes with the best resources,” said Elder. This includes upgrading facilities, obtaining advanced equipment, and enlisting specialists to assist both athletes and coaches. He emphasized the necessity for a robust medical support system to further enhance the athletes’ performance.

Elder also highlighted the importance of reaching out to talent in various provinces, noting the successful outreach programs conducted with the Fiji National Sports Commission that have enabled them to recruit new athletes. Looking ahead, he is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2026, with preparations already underway to identify potential medal contenders.

Taniela Rainibogi was honored as the FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, while Miriama Taletawa received the title of Sportswoman of the Year. Additionally, Nehemiah Elder was recognized as the young male athlete of the year.

As Weightlifting Fiji continues to build on its successes, the commitment to nurturing talent, improving infrastructure, and securing financial backing will be vital for advancing the sport and achieving even greater accomplishments in the future. Their progress signifies a hopeful trajectory for weightlifting in Fiji, inspiring both current and aspiring athletes.
