Weightlifting Fiji marked an impressive year by winning three notable awards at the Fiji Sports Council (FSC) 2023 sports awards. National coach Henry Elder expressed pride in the athletes’ performance, particularly highlighting their success at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship. “We are very proud and thankful for the athletes’ performances, hard work, and dedication,” Elder stated.

He acknowledged the support from the government, noting that it played a crucial role in their achievements. However, Elder also pointed out ongoing challenges related to funding, which is essential for competing at the highest level. “In order for us to compete at the highest level, we need the financial support to provide the athletes with the best possible means to perform,” he said. This includes the need for improved facilities, advanced equipment, and specialized support for both athletes and coaches.

Elder emphasized the importance of enhancing their medical support system and reaching out to various provinces to tap into the talent present across the country. He praised the Fiji National Sports Commission for facilitating outreach programs that have helped recruit new athletes.

Looking forward, Elder is optimistic about Weightlifting Fiji’s prospects for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, saying that preparations have already started and some potential medal contenders are being identified. “We are working on that, but we also need to grow our sport in terms of numbers of participants and with better financial support we’ll be able to do that,” he explained.

Notable individual achievements at the awards included Taniela Rainibogi earning the title of FSC 2023 Sportsman of the Year, Miriama Taletawa being recognized as Sportswoman of the Year, and Nehemiah Elder winning the Young Male Athlete of the Year award.

This year’s success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes and their coaches, as well as the support from organizations and the government. With continued effort and enhanced funding, the future looks bright for Weightlifting Fiji and its athletes.

Overall, the article paints a positive picture of the sport’s growth in Fiji, highlighting both achievements and ongoing challenges while showcasing the community’s dedication to nurturing talent.
