Weightlifting Fiji’s head coach, Henry Elder, is filled with optimism heading into 2025, following promising performances during the latest series of trials conducted over the past two months. With one more trial remaining, the team is in the final stages of preparation for several upcoming international competitions.

The most immediate challenge for the athletes will be the Youth and Junior Championships in Melbourne, Australia, next month. Elder aims to take a squad of approximately 12 lifters, although the final number will depend on qualifying outcomes. He anticipates that about 10 to 12 lifters will qualify, with expectations that around five will be contenders for medals.

Elder expressed his excitement about the quality of lifts observed during the trials. “So far, we have done very well. I’m very happy with what I’ve been seeing,” he noted, underlining his belief that this year could yield significant results for the team. The fourth and final trial is expected to take place at the end of this month.

Looking ahead, the competitive calendar is packed, featuring important events such as the World Youths and World Juniors in Lima, Peru, the Pacific Mini-Games, and the Commonwealth Championships in India.

The continuation of rigorous training and trials is indicative of Weightlifting Fiji’s commitment to nurturing talent and striving for excellence on an international scale. This proactive and optimistic approach offers hope for the athletes’ success as they aim to bring recognition not only to themselves but also to Fiji in the competitive weightlifting arena.

Weightlifting Fiji’s dedication to developing its athletes reflects broader national aspirations in sports, as the team works diligently toward achieving personal and collective excellence in the upcoming competitions.
