Six weightlifting athletes from Fiji have commenced a rigorous six-week training camp in Apia, Samoa, under the supervision of head coach Henry Elder. This training camp is seen as a crucial start towards a successful 2026 for the team.
According to Elder, the athletes have been looking forward to this opportunity to expand their skills and gain invaluable experience. “This training camp is for six weeks; it’s an intensive training camp,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of the event.
Fiji will be joined by athletes from other countries such as the Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, Nauru, New Zealand, and Australia, who will also be participating in this developmental camp. Coach Elder noted that all the Fijian athletes involved are aiming to qualify for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.
“Team Fiji will be in Samoa for the longest period, and the athletes we are taking to this camp are all those who are aspiring to qualify for the Commonwealth Games this year,” Elder explained.
He expressed confidence in the team’s potential performance this year and thanked the Government, sponsors, and families for their immense support. Acknowledging the essential financial assistance from the Government, Elder conveyed his appreciation to all supporters for their unwavering encouragement.
The team set off for Samoa yesterday, eager to maximize the training camp experience and work diligently towards achieving their weightlifting goals. This positive initiative not only highlights Fiji’s commitment to developing its athletes but also strengthens regional collaboration in sports training.
